Humpday Hullabaloo (Super Edition)

White Hinterland- Kairos

To make up for a lack of quality releases last week (and lack of an f/k HH), we were blessed with a number of great ones yesterday, which makes this week’s HH quite super. Out of the bunch, I’ve been listening to a lot of White Hinterland’s Kairos more than the others. It’s simply beautiful and spellbinding, and I love it. Having said that, there seems to be an album this week for everyone. With follow ups from loud groups like Liars and Titus Andronicus, indie rock bands like Frightened Rabbit, the Besnard Lakes and the Morning Benders, odder sounding projects like the Knife’s new opera release and jj’s nº 3, and even veteran involvement like Ted Leo’s new album and James Mercer’s collaboration as a part of Broken Bells, this week really does run the gamut of genres and has a release for almost everyone. So in addition to Kairos‘ opener “Icarus,” I thought I’d include tunes from some of the other releases to make up for last week. And because this week is super.

Video: She and Him: In the Sun

Could Zooey Deschanel be any more adorable? She already had singing and acting in her repertoire, but in this video for “In the Sun” off their upcoming Volume Two, she adds dancing the video beautifully. This song feels perfect for the current situation in recently sunny Connecticut, where temperatures have skyrocketed into the mid-fifties! M. Ward seems perfectly content to take the backseat to Zooey in both the actual music and the video, where he makes more of a cameo that a feature appearance, although he’s got his own gig so I understand. Volume Two comes out via Merge in two weeks on March 23.

Mumiy Troll on Ferguson

With Conan out of the late night game, our late night viewing habits have shifted to Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show only, leaving the TV dark from 11:30-12:30. Last night the Russian band Mumiy Troll made an appearance on the show. Although I had never heard of the band, (despite their having been around for 25 years apparently). They performed “Polar Bear,” as you’d be able to tell from the woman who comes out on stage wearing a polar bear costume. This was far and away the most eccentric and involved performance I’ve ever seen from a band on a late night talk show. Check out the video.

Laura Veirs & Cataldo Come to Minneapolis

Hey! If you live in the twin cities, check out Cataldo and Laura Veirs at The Cedar Cultural Center tomorrow night. It’s gonna be a great show, and I love the Cedar. Doors open at 7pm. Here’s a video of Laura Veirs from NPR Music. Eric Anderson, lead singer of Cataldo and a Macalester grad, is the dude in the glasses. Enjoy!

New Kate Nash: I Just Love You More

Kate Nash seems a little…angry. Kate Nash’s 2007 Made of Bricks was a really charming little album, filled with bubblegum pop piano riffs about love and growing up. I have no idea what the themes of Kate’s upcoming album are going to be, it’s untitled as of now, (the download from Nash’s official website marks the album title as “Final Mastered Album” in my iTunes) but judging on a preliminary listen to “I Just Love You More,” things seem to have changed a lot. Nash is still singing about love and things still don’t seem like they’re working out, but now she seems a little more irate about the whole situation. The entire sound palate of this song is completely unlike anything present on her debut. Plus she screams like a divine sounding banshee on several occasions. Her lyrics were occasionally scathing on Bricks, but the music always seemed to trudge along blissfully unaware of the subject matter. I love the outburst of emotion on this preliminary track to be honest, although I loved the debut album as well, and this certainly seems a lot different. You can download the track here (or below). I’ve offered up one of my favorite tracks from the original for a little comparison to see how Kate has changed in the past few years.

Joanna Newsom- Have One On Me

In case you hadn’t been paying attention, Joanna Newsom’s newest album since ‘06 hit stores yesterday to considerable amount of praise. Spanning over 2 hours on 3 cds, everyone’s favorite harpist turns in an effort that can be categorized as nothing short of epic. In fact, the only complaint I can possibly make is that it’s just too much material, which, in fairness, shouldn’t be a complaint. But I just can’t find 2 hours to sit down and listen to this thing in it’s entirety, and listening to it in fragments doesn’t seem like it does it justice. In any event, fans of Joanna or newly recruited fans (I must be placed in the latter) will find a sound that resembles her past efforts, but at the same time is fresh and new. In addition to it’s length, most of these songs are very dense, and like all great music, they require many listens to fully appreciate. Basically what I’m saying is that I won’t really have a grasp on this album for some time, after I’ve let everything soak in. In the meantime, you should pick this up and let us know what you think of it.
