Regina Spektor covering Radiohead

This is a little bit old, but I post it now because it’s amazing and for a good cause. Regina covers “No Suprises” off OK Computer. If you’re like me and you like Radiohead and Regina, you’ll love this. If you’re like a lot of people and love Radiohead but not really Regina, then you might think it’s blasphemous but maybe you’ll like it anyway! You can click here to purchase the video on iTunes

Careless Love

One of the albums from last year that I really, really missed  at the time was My Maudlin Career by Camera Obscura. I listened through it once and only “French Navy” stood out to me at the time, as the band played it on The Late Late Show. The other songs seemed nice enough, but didn’t pop as much as French Navy. Well, as tends to happen when you listen to one song way too much, I grew a little weary of French Navy and strayed to the rest of the album where I found respite in really intelligent and deep songwriting. This album has been accompanying me everywhere I go, both up at college and now back home for the better part of three weeks now, and it’s not really slowing down. It’s even been eating into my This is Happening time, an album I also adore. The emotional connection between Tracyanne Campbell, the lead singer, and the lyrics is breathtaking at times. On “James” she recalls “I got scared by just how hard I fell. You broke me, I thought I knew you well.” (shiver)

PS.  The band has a new single coming out featuring a cover of “The Nights are Cold” which you can order here on vinyl. Yum.

Faded Paper Figures

This is a killer song that our friend Liz posted a while back on The Blisslist (a must read). It’s quickly become one of my go-to tunes, I think they pull off the guy-and-girl-harmonies really well. Thanks for reading, dudes, I’m climbing back on the blogging horse this summer.

Quite the Hullabaloo

I’m posting this now instead of Wednesday because I can only assume my life will be taken over in the next few days by Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar’s newest game, which I’ve been waiting months and months for, is finally coming out tomorrow and, from what I’ve been reading, it will suck the soul of whoever plays it. So if that’s something you look for in a video game and have somehow missed the hype surrounding it, you might want to check that out. In addition, This Is Happening, LCD Soundsystem’s follow up to the magnificent Sound of Silver, also drops tomorrow. In case you haven’t heard it yet: it’s $. So if you’re looking for an album to buy, look no further. It’s cool, hip, and it’s what all the kids are listening to. Or, were listening to when it leaked weeks ago. Plus, don’t you want a vinyl so you can have a nice big version of that cover art with James Murphy?

I know I do. Also, I thought I’d throw in the Spike Jonze directed video for “Drunk Girls” along with the mp3 for anyone who hasn’t seen it. It’s not the best song off the album, but I do love the video. It’s just soooooo craaaaaazzzzzzyyyyy.

Summer Mix

Well it’s been quite some time since my last post, but summer’s finally here, I’m done with school, and the sun is shining. So instead of making excuses, I’m going to give you results. Here’s a little mix to get you in the summer mood with a bunch of relatively new songs that would have been featured in my Humpday Hullabaloo segment the last few weeks, had I done them. They basically correspond to Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” winners, which either says something about my taste or P4k’s. I haven’t decided. As a side note, like I mentioned on the f/k Twitter, if you want an album that you can blast during these summer days, or cruise to during the warm nights, look no further than Delorean’s Subiza. It fits the weather perfectly. Anyway, to the tunes.

The Radio Dept- Heaven’s On Fire

Twin Sister- Lady Daydream

Delorean- Warmer Places

Caribou- Odessa

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti- Round and Round

Girls- Summertime

Video: M.I.A – Born Free

M.I.A. has been busy lately in anticipation of her third studio album, coming on the heels of 2007 masterpiece Kala. She’s named her first two albums after her parents, so seeing as she’s run out I’m curious to see what she’ll name this one (unlikely to be as awesome as Piracy Funds Terrorism). Regardless, her creativity seems to be thriving rather than diminishing as she continues, as the first two songs we’ve heard thusfar off the upcoming album are utterly disparate from her body of work at present. For one, neither of the songs really fit into what I’d consider hip-hop, which was certainly the easiest genre to put Maya in before this. The first track to come out, “Space Odyessy,” was put together on a $100 budget, but M.I.A. definitely got a great value because it looks great despite being low budget. The second video we’ve seen must’ve been considerably more expensive, and it’s certainly more controversial. The clip contains American soldiers rounding up redheads and killing them off. Fellow blogger Hoge should watch out. Check it out below. (GRAPHIC CONTENT. DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.)

have no feaR, bishop is herE..!.,;’:.-

so yes, it has been a looooong while since i’ve posted and an even longer while since i’ve posted regularly, but fear not, for i am alive and well.

reasons for not posting: laziness, arrested development, rock climbing, work, sleep (or lack there of), molly, taking pictures, kentucky, abby d, bob saget, gmo’s, the netherlands, and cornell (as i am supposed to be working on a 10-pager right now).

i will also use the excuses stated above for my musical standstill, but i am still determined to bring something good to the table.

…and here it is.

What’s Up Readers?

It’s true, things have been slow recently at f/k. We’ve seemingly lost Bishop forever, due to his recent love affair with rock climbing. Anyways, I was feeling the need to make you all a nice mini-mix, so I did. These four songs are all awesome, and I hope you get the chance to listen to them in some sunshine. Speaking of sunshine,  you might recognize that spacey guitar sample in “Lately” from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Very cool. (That’s the band Memoryhouse in the pic above, btw.)

Okay, time for frisbee. Thanks for reading our blog.

Dr. Dog Is Pretty Chill

Here’s one of the best songs from Dr. Dog’s great new album, Shame, Shame. My friend Lewis may or may not comment to remind me that he showed it to me, so a preemptive thank you to Lewis. If you live in or around the twin cities, you should come see them with me at the Fine Line April 17th.

Sleigh Bells, Your Early Summer Jam

Whoa. I like Sleigh Bells a lot. Apparently they hit the blogosphere sometime last fall, but they’re new to me. The Brooklyn duo consists of Alexis, a singer (and former fifth grade teacher) and Derek, a beat-maker and songwriter. It’s only April, but I’m getting ready to blast their songs in my car this summer. I hope you enjoy these tunes as much as I do.
