Happy Birthday!
(Colin before playing the 19 minute epic, The Tain)
Very happy 35th birthday to my favorite songwriter of the modern era, Mr. Colin Meloy! I saw Colin a bit more than a week ago in New York City where he played a fantastic and truly special lottery show. Colin is almost done touring his most recent album, The Hazards of Love, an album sure to be mentioned in my end of the year list (and maybe no one else’s….) It’s his debut album, Castaways and Cutouts that really captivated me and brought me to be able to appreciate music that might deviate from the norm. For that I will always be grateful and indebted to Colin and his bandmates for making a beautiful record that sounds eerily like it was written with me in mind. Of course, I adore all his other records with great vigor, but none stick with me quite in the way that original one did. Here’s a song from that original album, and epic part-fugue that closed 2006’s The Crane Wife.
