In what ideally will be a weekly occurrence, Humpday Hullabaloo will strive to provide what I hope to be a solid album that came out the day before along with a brief overview. Sure, you could pick it up a day earlier, but isn’t it better to have it to get you through Humpday?
Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs
It’s been three years since Yo La Tengo released their previous effort, I Am Not Afraid of You And I Will Beat Your Ass, and Popular Songs picks up right where they left off. There’s really not too much that’s groundbreaking or new with YLT’s formula here, but instead this release just proves how good that formula is to begin with. It’s amazing to look at how consistently great they’ve been over the years, and this release is no exception. An ear-pleasing mix of lush voices and delightfully layered keyboards and guitars are used throughout various genres to create their unique sound, and validate why these guys have been around and at the top for so long. If ya gots da dough, I strongly suggest picking it up. Here’s a little sample:
